Ipswich came together in a grand celebration at Tulmur Place to honour the achievements of local Olympians Mollie O’Callaghan, Ella Ramsay, and Paralympians Poppy Wilson and Taymon Kenton-Smith. The community event, hosted by Olympic swimming star Brooke Hanson, was a tribute to the athletes’ hard work, perseverance, and dedication.
Mayor Teresa Harding expressed the pride of the city, emphasizing the impact these athletes have had on Ipswich. “Mollie, Ella, Poppy, and Taymon have proven that from right here in Ipswich, the sky is the limit,” she said. “Their achievements inspire the next generation and remind us of the power of community support.”
Mollie O’Callaghan, a former St Peters Lutheran College Springfield student, shone at Paris 2024, taking home five medals, including three golds. Ella Ramsay, who started her swimming journey at Railway Swimming Club, secured a silver medal in the Women’s 4x100m Medley Relay. Paralympian Poppy Wilson, whose mother was once told she would never walk, finished in the top 12 in her events, while Springfield Lakes resident Taymon Kenton-Smith narrowly missed out on a medal, placing fourth in archery.
The athletes received engraved City of Ipswich medallions as a token of appreciation. During a Q&A session hosted by Hanson, they shared insights into their challenges and triumphs, offering valuable lessons for the crowd. “Their efforts inspired us, thrilled us, and gave us immense pride,” said Mayor Harding.
The event also included fun activities like handball, giant chess, and face painting. Ipswich’s green and gold supporters turned out in full force, showing the power of community in celebrating local talent and fostering the dreams of future athletes.
