Ipswich recently hosted a weekend of artistic expression and sustainability, featuring the Ipswich Art Awards and the city’s first-ever Trashion Parade. The parade, organised by the Ipswich Climate Action Group, celebrated Sustainability Week with participants creating wearable art from recycled materials, showcasing ingenuity in eco-friendly fashion. Event MC Glen Smith praised the creativity displayed, noting the impressive array of outfits that transformed reused items into stylish statements.
The Ipswich Art Awards also kicked off with a packed opening night, attended by 450 people, highlighting the city’s vibrant arts scene. The annual event, held at the Dandiri Room in the Ipswich City Council building, attracted 450 artwork entries across various categories, including painting, photography, and sculpture. “It’s fantastic to see such a range of work from both seasoned and new artists,” Smith said. The exhibit, open through Saturday, allows visitors to view and purchase local artwork, with a People’s Choice Award also up for grabs.
This year’s Art Awards winners include Anita Richter from Morningside, who won the grand prize, and local standout entries across categories like mixed media, photography, and drawing. Notably, Emily Branwell’s quirky “Budgie Smugglers” Pierce received considerable praise. Glen encouraged residents to cast votes for the People’s Choice Award, emphasising the event’s inclusivity—open to artists of all skill levels.
Residents are encouraged to view the exhibit until November 9 at 1 Nicholas Street.
