Ipswich Cricket faced a challenging weekend as both the men’s and women’s teams battled tough opposition, with mixed results. Simon Emmerson, President of Ipswich Cricket, provided a rundown of the action on West Bremer Radio.

The first-grade men took on Wests but fell short by 60 to 70 runs. Despite a strong effort from Harry Shepard and Sean Luthor, who fought hard for the last wicket, the team couldn’t close the gap. “They’ll be looking to get going again next week,” said Emmerson.

Second grade also faced Wests, setting a target of 167. However, the batting deck flattened on day two, making it difficult for the bowlers to hold off Wests, who chased down the total comfortably.

On a brighter note, the second-grade women’s team secured a solid win in their first T20 match against Wynnum, scoring 117 and bowling out their opponents for 50. However, they fell short in the afternoon game against Valleys. With a key match against the Gold Coast on Sunday, they remain in contention for the T20 semi-finals.

The Taverners team enjoyed a strong performance, with Reese Johnson and Colby Rudd leading the way. Johnson’s 80 and Rudd’s half-century ensured a convincing win, despite being out of finals contention. “They’ve got the ability to shake up the competition,” Emmerson added.

The Rebecca McCombs Cup team, a young squad, had their match forfeited by the University team, which has been struggling for players this season. They will be back in action next weekend, continuing to build their team’s culture and confidence.

Despite recent narrow losses, Emmerson remains optimistic. “We’ve had a few retirements and players returning from England, but we’ve got the experience now to build momentum,” he said, with a crucial two-day match against Sandgate on the horizon.

Ipswich Cricket hopes to turn their fortunes around in the coming weeks as they aim for stronger performances across the board.
