Ipswich residents are invited to participate in a vital discussion on elder abuse as part of Seniors Month. The “Age with Attitude” event, originally linked to World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, will be held on Tuesday, October 8th, at Brothers Leagues Club in Raceview.

Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy, speaking on West Bremer Radio’s Crime Watch segment, emphasized the importance of addressing elder abuse and raising awareness. “Elder abuse can take various forms, including financial, emotional, physical, and social abuse, often perpetrated by trusted family members,” said Sheedy. She highlighted the need to “stand together against the abuse, mistreatment, and neglect of older people.”

The event is free to attend and will feature notable speakers from organizations such as ADA Australia’s Elder Abuse Prevention Unit and the Domestic Violence Action Centre. “It’s a great opportunity to join the community in recognizing this issue and working toward positive change,” Sheedy said. Registrations are essential for catering purposes and can be made by contacting Jesse Burns at 0455 316 207 or via email at jburns@starct.org.au.

For those unable to attend, Sheedy urged anyone witnessing or experiencing elder abuse to contact the Elder Abuse Hotline at 1300 651 192. She added, “Help is free, anonymous, and confidential. Everyone has a right to feel safe and be treated with dignity.”

The event will be held at Brothers Leagues Club Ipswich, starting at 10 a.m. with a light morning tea provided.
