Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding has revealed a giant mural of global superstar Ed Sheeran as part of her campaign to bring the singer to Ipswich during his 2025 tour.
The 11-metre by four-metre artwork, located in the Hotel Commonwealth car park, was commissioned and paid for by Warner Music Australia at no cost to ratepayers. Mayor Harding said the mural shows momentum is building to attract Sheeran to “the biggest and best Ipswich in the world.”
The campaign has already caught Sheeran’s attention. A message passed on to Harding from the Thomas Wolsey Pub in Ipswich, UK — where Sheeran performed a surprise gig earlier this year — confirmed the star is “looking into a few things.”
“I’m asking people to come and grab a selfie with the mural and tag Ed on Instagram,” Harding said. “Let’s bombard him with love and show him Ipswich wants him here.”
Alongside her campaign, Harding also confirmed council will call for expressions of interest for the historic Tallegalla School building. Closed since 1992, the site requires more than $120,000 in upgrades and $180,000 in ongoing maintenance, but the community has expressed a strong desire to see the heritage site preserved.
Council also launched a new Multicultural Advisory Committee, chaired by Councillor Pye Augustine, to strengthen engagement with the city’s culturally diverse communities. Ipswich is home to residents from 163 countries, speaking more than 150 languages.
The Mayor capped off a busy week by attending World Rivers Day tree planting at Woogaroo Creek and National Police Memorial Day, paying tribute to the 151 Queensland officers killed in the line of duty.
