As Ipswich recovers from the devastating impact of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, local MP Wendy Bourne has praised the resilience of the community and the tireless efforts of emergency responders.

Speaking with West Bremer Radio, Bourne described the widespread flooding and the united front displayed by residents. “The people of Ipswich are made of really tough stuff. We all just stick together and look after one another, and that’s what’s gotten us through,” she said.

Bourne, alongside federal MP Shane Newman, toured flood-affected areas and visited the Ipswich Showgrounds evacuation centre, where 24 people had sought shelter. She expressed gratitude to SES workers, firefighters, ambulance staff, and Energex crews working to restore power to impacted homes.

Retail workers, teachers, and frontline medical staff were also acknowledged for their efforts in maintaining services amid the crisis.

In a push for financial relief, Bourne and three other local MPs have written to the Minister for Disaster Recovery, requesting personal hardship and small business recovery grants for Ipswich. “Hopefully, we’ll hear back soon and can let the community know how to apply,” she said.

Meanwhile, the cleanup is in full swing, bolstered by the return of the “mud army” and community-led initiatives like Clean Up Australia Day in Marburg.

Bourne also discussed her ongoing work on the elder abuse inquiry, emphasizing the need for stronger protections for vulnerable seniors.

As Ipswich rebuilds, the local spirit remains unwavering. “We’ve been through a lot, but we’ll get through this together,” Bourne affirmed.
