Ipswich’s Top of Town precinct is set to light up on July 4 as the popular Night Markets return, bringing vibrant arts, live music, and community energy to the heart of the city. Market instigator and Small Business champion Katrina Lee unveiled plans on West Bremer Radio‘s Get Your Arts In Gear Podcast with Spark and Glen, aiming to bridge the gap between Ipswich Central Mall and the older CBD precinct—long overshadowed by recent developments.
Origins & Purpose
After a 2011 hiatus caused by devastating floods, Katrina and fellow retailers, including Jeanette Adams, initially launched the markets to rekindle foot traffic. With council-supported Linger A Bit grants, the event is now making a triumphant return. Katrina said the event underscores “decades-long frustrations” among top-of-town traders, especially in comparison to rival precinct investments.
What to Expect
The first night market of the season returns on Friday, July 4th, from 5 pm to 8 pm. Highlights include:
- Artisan stalls featuring local creatives: heat packs by Agape Mu, wheat-filled and handcrafted; “poetry on demand” by Patricor & Pages using vintage typewriters; and rotating visual artists.
- Live street performances in front of the Old Flour Mill, along with free entertainment for families.
- Unique pop-ups, such as a Gin tasting by Envivus and the Top of Town Cat Café.
- Connections, a special exhibition at the Booval Fair gallery, will run concurrently from July 17 until 8 pm, featuring interactive art activities for children, food trucks, and the introduction of the centre’s new dog mascot.
Katrina’s Vision
Katrina hopes the markets will grow so popular that they’ll warrant street closures, rivaling marquee events in Brisbane and beyond. She’s inviting all local retailers and creators to apply—art or non-art, all are welcome. To join, contact her via oldflourmill@myyahoo.com, and stay tuned via the Top of Town Market Night Facebook page.
With soft drinks and gin tastings, poetry on demand, and a festive atmosphere, Ipswich’s Top of Town Night Markets aim to revitalize the CBD and strengthen its cultural pulse—one Friday evening at a time.
