Ipswich West MP Wendy Bourne has praised local volunteers, community organisations and elected representatives following a busy week across the region.

Ms Bourne said National Volunteer Week and Neighbourhood Centre Week were important opportunities to thank the people who keep essential community services running. She visited both the Rosewood Community Centre and Leichhardt Community Centre, where she met volunteers and donated baby products and toiletries.

Ipswich Meals on Wheels was also recognised during the week as the organisation marked its 70th anniversary. Ms Bourne said the service plays a vital role not only by delivering meals, but also by providing social connection for people who may otherwise be isolated.

Local prostate cancer advocate Dennis Ellis was also celebrated after receiving the Max Gardner Award for his awareness work. Ms Bourne said Mr Ellis had spent years encouraging men to get checked and may have helped save lives through his advocacy.

The region’s rapid growth was another major focus, with federal, state and local representatives taking part in an elected representatives workshop to discuss Ipswich’s future. Ms Bourne said cooperation across all three levels of government was essential to deliver better outcomes on issues including housing, infrastructure and services.

She also attended Ipswich State High School’s “Breaking Barriers: Women in Trades and Tech” day, which encouraged young women to consider careers in traditionally male-dominated trades and technology fields.
