Ipswich wellness coach Loz Antonenko is on a mission to help locals rethink their relationship with snacking, warning that many cravings are less about hunger and more about habits, boredom, or even lack of sleep.

Speaking on West Bremer Radio’s Brekkie Club this week, Loz said too many people fall into what she calls the “snack trap”—mindlessly polishing off chips or biscuits only to feel unsatisfied.

“It’s not about willpower,” Loz explained. “Most of the time, you’re not even hungry—you’re procrastinating, bored, dehydrated or running on too little sleep. Without sleep, we become snack zombies, craving sugar and carbs just to get through the day.”

She offered three simple tips for beating the cravings:

  • Move first: Do something physical, like a short walk or even 10 squats, before raiding the pantry to test whether it’s real hunger.
  • Prioritise sleep: Poor sleep can make the body crave quick sugar hits. “Your bedtime choices impact your hunger the next day,” Loz said.
  • Hydrate: Drink water before reaching for food, as thirst often disguises itself as hunger.

To help people reset their habits, Loz is launching a Snack Trap Rehab Challenge starting October 1. The 14-day program offers practical strategies for smarter snacking without cutting out fun foods.

At just $47, Loz said the challenge is “cheaper than therapy and could change the way you snack forever.”
