Ipswich has welcomed the opening of Queensland’s newest public hospital, with the Mater Hospital Springfield now set to deliver major health services for the fast-growing region.

Mayor Teresa Harding said the new hospital would provide emergency care, maternity services, intensive care, surgery, paediatrics and specialist outpatient services. The hospital is expected to support about 1,700 births in its first year.

Cr Harding said the opening was a major milestone for Ipswich, which has officially been recognised as Queensland’s fastest-growing region. She said around 20 per cent of Ipswich residents work in healthcare and social assistance, making the hospital an important service and employer for the city.

The city also marked 70 years of Ipswich Meals on Wheels, with a celebration at the Ipswich Turf Club during National Volunteer Week. Ipswich was the birthplace of Meals on Wheels in Queensland, and the event recognised past and present volunteers for their service.

Cr Harding said Meals on Wheels provides more than food, with volunteers often offering important social connection to people who may otherwise be isolated.

Meanwhile, Ivory’s Rock hosted a major racing weekend, attracting about 4,000 athletes and 2,000 spectators for Spartan racing and the OCR Community World Championships. Competitors travelled from countries including Denmark, Spain, Colombia, the United States and New Zealand.

Cr Harding said the event delivered benefits for local cafes, accommodation providers and hospitality businesses, while also showcasing Ipswich’s outdoor event potential.

The Mayor also highlighted the opening of The Link at Riverlink, describing the upgraded area as a major facelift and a welcome improvement for shoppers and the wider community.
