With the 2024 Melbourne Cup just days away, racing experts Rowan Anderson and Jason Lawson from West Bremer Radio share their top predictions for the “race that stops the nation.” Both tipsters offer insights on standout horses, as well as a few surprise contenders to watch.
Jason’s top choice for the Melbourne Cup remains Vauban, a horse he has been backing since August. “Vauban comes in as the current favourite at $6. His performance in Europe is strong, and he’s expected to handle the distance. The quality of the field this year isn’t as strong as previous years, so he’s definitely a top-two or top-three chance,” Lawson said.
Lawson also suggests Buckaroo, currently paying $6.50, as a strong contender, but notes it will need a solid strategy from jockey Joao Moreira due to its wide barrier draw of 21. Another top pick is Warp Speed ($26), a Japanese horse with proven stamina in two-mile races, which he describes as an “excellent each-way bet.”
Rowan, meanwhile, has thrown his support behind Absurd ($9), a winner in last year’s Ebor Handicap and seventh in last years Melbourne Cup, known for its stamina and consistency. Anderson’s top trifecta selections are Vauban, Absurd, Sea King, and Akita Sushi, with a surprise choice of The Map ($51), which he describes as “one to watch,” hoping jockey Rachel King could bring a Melbourne Cup victory.
The experts will also be keeping a close eye on the Big Dance at Randwick, a lesser-known but highly competitive race featuring regional winners. Gringotts from the Ciaron Maher stable is currently the favourite.
As Melbourne Cup Day approaches, both experts remind punters to gamble responsibly and enjoy the thrilling atmosphere. The Melbourne Cup will take place on Tuesday, November 5, at Flemington Racecourse.
