As the state election draws near, Bundamba MP and Minister for Skills and Training, Lance McCallum, discussed a range of important local and state initiatives on West Bremer Radio. During the interview, Minister McCallum emphasized the significance of Women’s Health Week, which aims to raise awareness about the unique health challenges faced by women and girls in the community.

“Women’s Health Week is a crucial time to focus on the specific health burdens women face, including underdiagnosis and inadequate treatment,” McCallum stated. He highlighted several initiatives under the Queensland government’s women and girls’ health strategy, such as decriminalizing abortion, providing free period products in schools, and introducing reproductive health leave for public sector workers. The strategy also includes a dedicated women’s health phone line, ensuring that women can easily access the support they need.

In addition to health initiatives, McCallum addressed the ongoing cost-of-living pressures, emphasizing the state government’s efforts to provide relief. He highlighted the success of the 50-cent public transport fares, energy rebates, and the expansion of the “Free Tools for First Years” program. This initiative offers first-year apprentices in construction, plumbing, engineering, and electrical trades up to $1,000 in tools, helping to alleviate the financial burden on young workers.

McCallum also discussed the recent groundbreaking for a new $34 million police facility in Ripley, which will include a new station and district headquarters, enhancing community safety with the addition of 30 new officers. He further noted the progress on the Collingwood Park State Secondary College, which is set to open in Term 1 of 2025, with enrolments now open.

These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to supporting the Bundamba community, ensuring access to essential services and easing financial pressures as the state election approaches.
