Ipswich is set to gain hundreds of new jobs with the completion of a major Officeworks distribution centre, as the city also celebrates sustainability milestones, sporting success and a special centenary.

Mayor Teresa Harding said the new Officeworks facility at the Redbank Motorway Estate is one of the largest buildings of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and is now moving into its fit-out stage. Once operational, the centre is expected to create hundreds of local jobs.

The site joins a growing industrial hub that already includes major operators such as Coles, Australia Post, Rymatil, Bapcor and L’Oréal. Cr Harding said the area’s strong motorway access and proximity to Redbank Station made it an increasingly attractive destination for large-scale investment.

The Mayor also joined celebrations for the 100th birthday of Salvation Army Major Jean Byrd, who served in World War II from the age of 18 and later devoted decades of service to the Salvation Army. Family travelled from interstate for the occasion, and tributes were sent from figures including the King and Queen, the Governor-General, the Prime Minister and other leaders.

On the environment front, Ipswich City Council says it has now completed 81 per cent of the actions under its five-year sustainability strategy, launched in 2021. Projects include work on a draft decarbonisation plan, green energy precincts and new rooftop solar installations. One of the standout projects is the 200-kilowatt solar system installed at Ipswich Central Library in the Nicholas Street Precinct, which is expected to reduce council energy costs and emissions.

Sport was also high on the agenda, with the Ipswich Jets recording an 18-16 win over the Burleigh Bears to move to the top of the Hostplus Cup ladder. Cr Harding said the match was also an opportunity to discuss the region’s push for an NRL licence with Queensland Rugby League chief executive Ben Ikin, as momentum continues to build for a Western Corridor team.

She also praised rising sprint star Gout Gout after his record-breaking run, saying his performance had again put the region in the national spotlight.
