Spider-Man has swung into cinemas with extraordinary success, smashing box office records and filling theatres across the country, with Limelight Cinemas experiencing one of its busiest weekends in recent memory.

Speaking on the Limelight Cinemas Podcast, Lex said the latest Spider-Man film had exceeded all expectations, with packed sessions and enthusiastic fans turning out in force.

“It was incredible to see cinemas full of people,” Lex said.

“You see a cinema full of people coming in to see Spider-Man together, and that’s just my favourite thing.”

One of the highlights for Marvel fans has been the tradition of staying through the credits to catch the post-credit scenes.

“The credits start rolling, the lights come up and literally no one budges because they know they’ve got to sit right to the end.”

Record-breaking performance

The latest Spider-Man film has reportedly delivered the biggest opening weekend of 2026, surpassing previous blockbuster records set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and even Avengers: Endgame.

Lex said the opening weekend had been a “juggernaut” and expected another strong weekend ahead.

“It’s been an absolutely huge result for the team at Sony,” Lex said.

Merchandise sells out

The popularity of the release wasn’t limited to movie tickets.

Spider-Man-themed merchandise, including collectible popcorn tins, drink cups and water bottles, disappeared almost immediately.

“We’ve got about two water bottles left—that’s about it,” Lex said.

“We just got absolutely hammered.”

New releases arrive this week

While Spider-Man continues to dominate the big screen, Limelight Cinemas is also welcoming three new releases this week.

Comedy fans can catch Super Troopers 3, the latest instalment in the cult comedy franchise, while horror enthusiasts can experience Ice Cream Man, directed by Eli Roth, featuring a sinister twist on the familiar neighbourhood ice cream van.

For those looking for something lighter, Holy Days offers a heartfelt New Zealand comedy set in the 1970s, following three eccentric nuns who help a young boy navigate family change and loss.

Spider-Man and all new releases are now showing at Limelight Cinemas. Tickets and session times are available through the cinema’s website.
