Ipswich Division 2 Councillor Nicole Jonic is preparing to step into the role of Acting Mayor for the next three weeks, assuring residents it will be “business as usual” as the city enters a busy period of upgrades and community celebrations.
Among the major works, stage two of the Springfield Parkway upgrade will kick off nightworks from 7 September. The works, running between 7pm and 5am, will focus on the section from Bridgewater Road to Panorama Drive. “This upgrade will deliver a much-needed signalised crossing at Topaz Road, making it safer for Woodcrest students,” Cr Jonic said. The $ multi-million project also includes stormwater, sewer, telecommunications and electrical relocations.
At Camira Recreation Reserve, new sprinklers and irrigation controllers worth $325,000 have been installed, improving playing surfaces for the Western Pride Football Club and the Greater Springfield Sports Cricket Club.
Cr Jonic also highlighted Ipswich’s heritage and future with the planting of 100 new jacarandas in Goodna to mark the approach of the trees’ 100-year anniversary in 2032. Many of the original trees were planted during the Great Depression. “We want to make sure the purple rain continues for future generations,” she said.
The coming weeks will also see two major community events in Division 2: Spring Fest at Robelle Domain on 13 September, celebrating Filipino culture with dance, food and entertainment; and SpringCon at Goodna State School on 4–5 October, featuring cosplay, board games and tournaments.
“It’s a busy but exciting time for our community,” Cr Jonic said. “From road upgrades to sporting improvements and cultural festivals, we’re making sure Division 2 continues to grow and thrive.”
