Round 8 of the Volunteers’ Cup saw the Premiership head back to Toowoomba, and to the home of the Roosters, Herb Steinohrt Oval.

Three close encounters in Round 8, with 12 points the biggest winning margin of the day.

Goodna, after suffering their first loss of the season last week, bounced back with a 28-16 win over the West End Bulldogs, in the all Rugby League Ipswich match-up of the day.
In the all-Toowoomba clash, Gatton snared their second win of the season, by downing the Souths Tigers for the second time this season.

In the match of the day, the battle for second on the table was won by Valleys Roosters, as the home team came away with the points, defeating the North Ipswich Tigers, 26-18. Valleys now hold second outright, on the premiership ladder, with two games still to play.

With two rounds left in the competition, the top three have secured their place in the finals, but that final place is still very much up for grabs.

Following Gatton’s upset win over the Souths Tigers, those two teams, and the West End Bulldogs, all now sit on four points, but crucially, it’s the Bulldogs with a better for/against record, and that’s what could be the determining factor, in who plays finals Football, and who doesn’t.

Next weekend, Richardson Park plays host to the penultimate round of the regular season, which will see Goodna face Gatton in the ‘Match of the Day’, while the Tigers’ Derby pits Souths against Norths, and the Roosters will face the Bulldogs.

Given the situation at hand, in the battle for fourth, the three teams vying for that final place in the play-offs start as underdogs next weekend, which will help the Bulldogs, who have a substantial advantage when it comes to their ‘for and against’ record.

As always, you’ll be able to hear the ‘Match of the Day’ on West Bremer Sport, but before that, Bomber and Zak will preview the round, when the ‘Week End Sports Swich’ comes your way, on Saturday morning, from 9am AEST!
