In a lively Tuesday morning broadcast, West Bremer Radio welcomed Glen Smith and musician Brian Bennion, marking a special segment dedicated to the environmental and cultural significance of their latest music release. Bennion, often recognized for his journalistic endeavours, took the spotlight this time as a musician, discussing the remix of his band’s song “Trace.”
The Leads, a local band with Bennion as both bassist and guitarist, released “Trace” in November. The song, now remixed, emphasises a deep connection to the history and struggles of Deebing Creek, an area under threat from development. The remix, uniquely featuring the didgeridoo as a central instrument, was crafted by DK, highlighting a blend of traditional sounds and modern beats.
During the interview, Bennion shared his inspiration for “Trace,” rooted in his experiences at Lake Mungo, a site of historical and geographical significance. He drew parallels between Lake Mungo and Deebing Creek, both places rich in cultural heritage but facing modern challenges. Bennion’s visit to Deebing Creek, marked by its fossilised coral reef, motivated him to raise awareness about its impending destruction due to development plans.

Adding to the song’s depth, DK, an Indigenous protector of the area, contributed with didgeridoo and Jagara vocals, making “Trace” a poignant blend of music and activism. The remix version, created almost serendipitously during a mixing session, brought out a unique sound by isolating the bass guitar and didgeridoo tracks, leading to an entirely new musical experience.
The broadcast not only highlighted the song but also underscored the importance of local music and environmental activism. Bennion’s commitment to preserving Deebing Creek through his music exemplifies how artists can influence and inspire community action.
For those interested in supporting this cause and enjoying a unique musical experience, the limited edition remix CD of “Trace” is available through The Leads’ Facebook and Instagram pages. As the interview concluded, anticipation grew for their upcoming album, set to launch at Banshee’s Bar on October 18th, promising more local tunes with meaningful messages.
