The Queensland government has launched a new senior strategy aimed at enhancing the quality of life for the state’s aging population. State MP and Minister for Seniors and Disability Services, Charis Mullen, announced the initiative on West Bremer Radio, emphasising its importance in addressing the needs of older Queenslanders. With a growing number of seniors, the strategy focuses on providing essential services and support to help them live active, healthy, and fulfilling lives.

The strategy includes measures to combat social isolation, a significant issue among seniors, particularly those living alone. Mullen highlighted the availability of social isolation grants, which fund activities and programs designed to connect older residents with their communities. Local organizations such as Ipswich 60 and Better and the YMCA in Springfield Lakes have already been active in offering programs like gentle exercise classes, which have proven successful in bringing seniors together.

In addition to the senior strategy, Mullen discussed other important initiatives in the region. The Queensland government is set to distribute over 140,000 free laptops to disadvantaged students across the state, including those in the Ipswich area. This effort aims to bridge the digital divide in education, ensuring that all students have access to essential technology.

Mullen also shared the success of the recently introduced 50-cent public transport fares, which have already led to an 11% increase in patronage in just one week. The fare, part of a six-month trial, has been particularly beneficial for residents in Ipswich and Logan, who often face higher commuting costs due to the zone system. The trial’s success could lead to its continuation if the government is re-elected.

Finally, Mullen encouraged local families to participate in a competition for tickets to the popular Bluey live experience, further engaging the community in fun and family-friendly activities.
