State Member for Jordan, Charis Mullen MP, has celebrated the achievements of the Brisbane Lions and highlighted key local issues during her latest State of Play update.
Mullen said Greater Springfield was buzzing after the Lions’ back-to-back AFL premiership win, with Brighton Homes Arena packed for a community fan day. “It shows how special Brighton Homes Arena has become — not just for elite sport but as a place where our community can come together,” she said. The celebrations continued on Sunday with the AFLW Lions defeating Richmond, further cementing Queensland’s sporting success.
October also marks Seniors Month, which Mullen said was an important time to honour older residents. Locally, the Ipswich Thriving Seniors Program at Springfield Lakes YMCA is offering activities including painting, excursions, music and line dancing. “It’s a fun, welcoming space that helps combat isolation and keeps our seniors active and engaged,” she said.
On a more serious note, Mullen raised concerns about new hospital performance KPIs introduced by the LNP government. She warned the rules, which reduce hospital funding if patients are ramped for more than two and a half hours, could put patient safety and staff under pressure. “When you force hospitals to focus on a time limit rather than medical needs, it risks compromising care,” she said, pointing to the recent White family case at Ipswich Hospital.
Mullen also praised the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield for unveiling a new Peace Pole at Robelle Domain Parklands, featuring the message “May peace prevail on earth” in 14 languages including Braille, reflecting the area’s diversity.
