The Get Your Arts Into Gear podcast returned with an upbeat episode this week as hosts DJ Sparky and Glenn Smith highlighted a string of events honouring local artists, celebrating community achievements, and supporting those in need across Ipswich.
The episode opened with a nod to Disability Awareness Month, featuring a new mural display at the Booval Fair Arts Connect Community Gallery. The board showcases work from three Arts Connect artists living with disability—an initiative spearheaded by artist and advocate Deb Chilton. The hosts encouraged the public to visit the gallery and support inclusive, community-driven art.
Conversation quickly shifted to a packed weekend for the region’s arts scene. Glenn recapped the launch of Ipswich theatre icon Arthur Frame’s new book, describing the event as “incredible” and revealing that Frame is set to be honoured as a life member of the Australian Heritage Association. The book, which highlights Frame’s storied career and the development of theatre in Ipswich and Brisbane, is now available through the Ipswich Art Gallery and local information centres.
The pair also reflected on the final Arts Alive member exhibition after 21 years, calling it “the end of an era” for the long-running collective.
Looking forward, excitement is building for the Get Your Arts Into Gear Awards on December 13, the region’s only event recognising the arts in all forms—from visual arts to performance. Judging is complete, winners are sealed in an envelope, and the show will be livestreamed on YouTube.
The following day, December 14, the annual Off The Wall exhibition opens at the Ipswich Community Gallery, featuring works from more than 40 local artists across mediums including glasswork, woodwork, painting, photography, and festive crafts. Entertainment will be provided by local musician Nick Humby, with catering by Jill Hills.
The podcast also highlighted a growing community effort to support Hannah’s House Domestic Violence Centre and local individuals experiencing homelessness. Thanks to listener and community donations, the team has already collected several trolley loads of non-perishable food and essential items, with calls for more contributions as demand increases.
Donations can be dropped at The Vintage Advantage on Brisbane Street or directly at the Booval Fair gallery.
The episode wrapped with good-natured banter about absent guest Donna—who was out collecting charity donations—and promises of more guests and arts news next week on West Bremer Radio.
