Ipswich City Council has kicked off 2026 with a series of major infrastructure and community investment announcements, as Division 1 Councillor Pye Augustine stepped in for the mayor during the first council update of the year.
One of the key highlights is the Purga School Road bridge upgrade, which has reached a significant milestone with bridge deck units now arriving on site. The project includes upgrades across a 1.6-kilometre stretch of road and the replacement of the former narrow, one-way bridge with a modern two-lane structure.
Cr Augustine said the upgrade would greatly improve safety and connectivity for residents in Purga and surrounding areas, particularly those travelling between Morgan’s Road and Ipswich–Boonah Road. The $7.9 million project includes a $5 million contribution from the Federal Government through the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program.
Council has also confirmed a three-year sponsorship agreement with the Ipswich Show Society, providing $30,000 per year from 2026 to 2028. The long-term commitment will help the 152-year-old Ipswich Show plan more securely while continuing to deliver significant economic benefits to the region.
The Ipswich Show is estimated to inject close to $1 million into the local economy each year, attracting visitors from across South East Queensland and beyond.
Further west, residents in growing suburbs received positive news with confirmation that Adelong Avenue in Deebing Heights will undergo a major upgrade. The $2.8 million project will cover around 12,000 square metres of pavement, improve drainage and increase flood resilience using foam-modified bitumen designed to better withstand water exposure.
Cr Augustine said the works would address long-standing flooding issues and deliver safer, more reliable access for local residents.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about these and other projects through the Ipswich City Council website, social media channels, or by following their local councillors online.
