Ipswich’s oldest shopping centre, Booval Fair, is embracing its role as the “Heart of the Community” with the launch of a brand-new mascot, Buddy the Kangaroo, and a vibrant evening festival, Electric Spark, taking place on Thursday, 17 July from 5pm to 9pm.

The event, held in conjunction with the SPARK Ipswich Festival, will see Buddy make his official debut, bringing fun, colour, and community spirit to life.

“Buddy is more than just a mascot—he’s the embodiment of community connection here at Booval,” said Marketing Manager Rachel during an appearance on West Bremer Radio. “He’s based on our Roo’s Kids Club from two years ago, and now he’s stepping into the spotlight as a symbol of joy and welcome.”

🎉 Electric Spark at Booval Fair – What to Expect:

  • Live music featuring local group The Minor Chords
  • Messy art stations and free kids’ activities
  • Food trucks and market stalls in the front car park
  • Free community art exhibition inside the Arts Connect Gallery
  • Buddy’s Book GiveawayFirst 100 kids receive a free colouring book starring Buddy
  • Special guest appearance by Mr. Christmas himself, John Walton, now Buddy’s new best mate

“This is a celebration of our history and our future,” added Glen Smith, curator of the Arts Connect Community Gallery. “Booval Fair has really reignited its community heart—this event captures that perfectly.”

📚 More Than Just a Party

Electric Spark also highlights Booval Fair’s ongoing investment in local well-being, with initiatives such as:

  • A free community library (donate a book, take a book)
  • A dedicated quiet space for sensory regulation and reflection
  • Regular events like messy art days and Why To Tribe, a fortnightly community mental health chat group in the food court

“These aren’t just add-ons. They reflect who we are,” said Rachel. “We’ve been here since 1969, and we’re still evolving to serve Ipswich in meaningful ways.”
