Ipswich Division 4 Councillor Dave Martin has praised the city’s community spirit after a week packed with local events celebrating craftsmanship, cars, culture and history.

Cr Martin visited the Rosewood Crafts and Quilters at St Paul’s Anglican Church, where he said the talent and dedication on display was “amazing.”
“Some of those quilts and crafts look like they’d take years to complete. The ladies come from all different backgrounds but share such incredible skills,” he said.

The councillor also joined revheads at the popular Ipswich Laps, where classic Holdens, Fords, Chevys and even a three-wheeler car rolled through the CBD. “It’s great to see the top of town alive. Millions of dollars’ worth of cars come out for the night and it’s a real boost for local cafés and restaurants,” he said, crediting the Ipswich Laps team for their efforts.

Cars were also the focus of Orion Springfield Central’s Father’s Day event, which combined a display of more than 200 vehicles with fundraising for men’s mental health. “It ain’t weak to speak,” Cr Martin said. “The shirts with messages like ‘seeking help is a sign of strength’ were fantastic. Men often don’t talk about their struggles enough, so events like this are vital.”

On the arts front, Cr Martin had a sneak peek at rehearsals for Ipswich Musical Theatre Company’s production of Come From Away. The show, based on the true story of passengers grounded in Newfoundland during the 9/11 attacks, opens this month at Ipswich Civic Centre.

Looking ahead, Cr Martin highlighted the 150th anniversary of Rosewood State School this Saturday, featuring memorabilia, old classroom displays and a time capsule ceremony. He also noted finals fever for Ipswich rugby league sides and upcoming community pop-ups, including the Black Snake Creek Festival at Marburg.

“Being out in the community is one of the best parts of the job,” Cr Martin said. “Ipswich certainly knows how to come together.”
