Ipswich-based artist and entrepreneur Hue is making her mark on the local arts scene, combining her background in photography with a growing passion for mixed media art.

Speaking on West Bremer Radio’s Getting Your Arts Into Gear, Hue reflected on her creative journey, which began during the pandemic. “I’ve always been creative, but I realised painting people wasn’t my strength. As a portrait photographer, I started using photographs as the foundation for my art, then added watercolour, paper, or anything else that inspired me. Mixed media gave me permission to use everything.”

Hue’s work is heavily storytelling-based, focusing on themes of identity. “Each piece carries a story—my story—but I hope it resonates with others who see themselves in it,” she said. Her bold, colourful, feminine style is intentionally personal, though she welcomes the connection it creates with audiences.

To push her practice forward, Hue built a website and began treating her art as a business. “Investing in a website was my way of making myself take it seriously. If I didn’t turn it into a business, I would never have made the time.”

Currently, Hue is the feature artist at the newly established Brookwater Gallery, which operates as a social enterprise. The gallery spotlights different artists each month, giving locals another outlet to showcase their work. “It’s about creating community within the community,” Hue said.

Her art can be viewed online at https://huetheartist.com/ and on Instagram and LinkedIn under the same name.
