The All Ability Hour on West Bremer Radio tackled an important new development in disability services, featuring Daryl from Mpower You, who introduced listeners to the NDIS-funded Employment Support Coordination role.

Launched on July 1, 2023, this new funding category helps individuals with disabilities navigate the workforce by providing consistent support throughout their employment journey. Unlike standard support coordination, this program ensures participants receive guidance in securing and maintaining jobs, working closely with employers, support networks, and families.

“This role provides continuity and a trusted point of contact for participants,” said Daryl. “It ensures that all stakeholders are on the same page and working towards the same goal—helping people with disabilities find meaningful employment.”

Empower You also offers Supported Independent Living (SIL), community access support, and specialised mental health services, making them a comprehensive provider in Ipswich, Brisbane, Logan, and the Gold Coast.

Support Worker Standards: What’s Expected?

The discussion shifted to the expectations and challenges of support work, emphasizing the importance of genuine engagement, professional boundaries, and reliability.

“Support workers should be fully present, not on their phones, and maintain professional relationships with clients,” said Daryl. “You can be friendly, but you can’t be their friend—it’s a paid role, and those boundaries must be clear.”

With the demand for support workers increasing, the episode encouraged prospective workers to seek formal training, such as a Certificate III or IV in Individual Support.
