Ipswich City Council’s Fire Station 101 up in Limestone Street has been transformed into a multi-arts hub, breathing new life into the space and providing a vibrant venue for local artists and performers. Mayor Teresa Harding highlighted this exciting development during a Tuesday morning interview on West Bremer Radio, emphasising the positive feedback from the Ipswich Arts Advisory Group and attendees at the 2023 Creators of Ipswich Summit.

“The Drowsy Chaperone,” a recent production hosted at the transformed hub, has drawn significant praise. Despite not catching a full performance, Mayor Harding appreciated the 1920s-themed setup and the dedication of the cast. The show’s success is evident, with nearly every performance sold out, adding to the anticipation for future productions.

In other cultural news, the city is preparing for the upcoming Galvanized Festival of Heritage. Scheduled for Saturday, August 31st, the festival will feature the Indigenous Wild Food and Cultural Festival for the first time in Ipswich. Previously held in Brisbane, this event attracts thousands of visitors and promises to be a highlight, featuring talented Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, food and cooking demonstrations, cultural workshops, performances, and fireworks.

Mayor Harding also shared positive updates on the financial support provided by the council, including a $21,500 grant to ensure the continued success of the Galvanized Festival. The council’s commitment to heritage and culture is clear, with initiatives aimed at enhancing community engagement and preserving local traditions.

In sports news, Ipswich City Council has secured over $18 million under the SEQ Livability Fund. This substantial funding will be used to expand the Redbank Plains Recreational Reserve and the Tivoli Sporting Complex, providing additional fields, enhanced facilities, and improved lighting. These developments are set to benefit various local sports clubs, including the Musketeers Baseball Club, Thunder Cricket Club, and Collingwood Park AFL Club.

Furthermore, the Ipswich Jets celebrated a significant victory, with their netball team winning the state title. The Sapphires triumphed with a 59-50 score, marking their second premiership since 2019. Mayor Harding praised the team’s performance and the seamless integration of the netball girls with the broader Jets community.

As Ipswich continues to grow and thrive, the transformation of Fire Station 101 and other initiatives underscore the council’s dedication to fostering a vibrant and engaged community.
