Ipswich is gearing up for the second annual Queerswich event, set to take place on August 3rd. Organised by Pink Flamingo Productions, Queerswich promises to be a celebration of pride, inclusivity, and the arts, making a significant impact on the local community.
Rachel, representing Pink Flamingo Productions, spoke to Glen Smith on West Bremer Radio, expressed her excitement about the event. “Last year was huge, and this year it’s going to be bigger and better,” she said. The event will feature the Friends of Dorothy art show at Art Time Gallery, with a theme centered around pride. The gallery, generously donated by Cass from Art Time, will showcase phenomenal artwork and hold a closing event where the winners will be announced.
Bank of Queensland’s Kenmore and Riverlink branches have sponsored the prize money for the art competition, adding to the excitement and prestige of the event.
Queerswich’s main event on August 3rd will be held in Tomal Place within the Nicholas Street Precinct from 1 pm to 6 pm. This year, the event will utilize the council’s rainbow lighting on the building, enhancing the atmosphere of inclusivity and celebration. “The council has been very supportive,” Rachel noted, thanking Mayor Teresa Harding for her continued support.
The day will be packed with performances from local talents, including a condensed version of Tim Wynne’s latest show about the Go-Go’s, local comedian Fran Mulcahy as Fran the Fairy Godmother, and several drag troupes like Palace Ipswich and the Golden Girls of Drag. Additionally, the event will feature the popular puppy pageant and the Wonder Woman beanbag toss, promising fun for all attendees.
Queerswich also serves an important role in the community by providing visibility and support for the LGBTQ+ community. “It’s all about taking away the shame and stigma, making it normal,” Rachel explained. The event aims to support queer youth, who face higher rates of self-harm and suicide, by providing a safe and welcoming space.
Educational and support groups, such as P-Flag and Free Mum Hugs, will also be present, offering resources and community connections. Queerswich Social, a monthly get-together initiated after last year’s event, continues to provide a regular safe space for the LGBTQ+ community and their allies.
Queerswich is not just for the queer community but for everyone. It’s an opportunity for the entire Ipswich community to come together, celebrate diversity, and learn more about each other. Rachel emphasized, “It’s not about one group being raised above another. It’s about all being together.”
