Originally inspired by the Hawkesbury Chamber of Commerce’s hamper efforts in Sydney, Donna and Oggy began the project modestly, delivering 20 hampers in their first year. Over time, the drive has expanded significantly, now distributing 300 hampers annually. The hampers are carefully curated based on anonymous lists from the Women’s Crisis Centre and Hannah’s House, ensuring that each recipient family receives items tailored to their needs.

“The holiday season can be a very difficult time for some,” Donna explained during a recent interview. “It’s the period with the highest suicide rates. Our goal is to bring some light and hope to those who are struggling.”

The operation now involves not only local shelters but also Ipswich Assist, focusing on homeless individuals. Last year, they added 90 homeless-specific packs, and this year, they’re introducing “Lisa’s Lunches” to support further.

Helping Support Minds is actively seeking donations of goods and a new storage location after losing access to their previous Ipswich Showgrounds space. They require a site with air conditioning and storage facilities to ensure food safety throughout the summer.

Ipswich locals are encouraged to support the initiative by donating items to the drop-off point at The Vintage Advantage (185 Brisbane Street, Ipswich). As the Christmas season approaches, Donna and her team remain committed to making a difference in the community.
