In Ipswich, local police are urging residents to enhance their home security to prevent theft and break-ins. During a recent Crime Watch segment on the Brekkie Show on West Bremer Radio, Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy highlighted the importance of securing not only occupied homes but also properties under construction, renovations, or those that are vacant or rented out.

Home Security in Ipswich

Sheedy stressed that effective home security involves more than just locking doors and windows. “We’re encouraging Ipswich residents to conduct a thorough risk assessment and security audit of their properties,” Sheedy explained. “Identify any potential weaknesses that could be exploited by offenders and address them immediately.”

Key recommendations include installing solid external doors with quality locks, fitting secure screen doors, and using key-locked windows. Sheedy also emphasised the benefits of perimeter security measures such as sensor lighting and CCTV cameras. “Good home security starts with making it difficult for an offender to gain entry and even harder for them to exit with your belongings,” she said.

Additional advice includes locking away valuable items like bikes and garden tools, securing vehicles with anti-theft devices, and marking property with identification to deter theft. For those with older vehicles, using engine immobilizers and wheel locks can provide extra protection.

Sheedy also highlighted the importance of maintaining visibility around your property by trimming trees and shrubs, and using anti-fix screws to secure number plates. “It’s crucial to lock up every time,” she added, noting that even when at home, securing all entrances can prevent opportunistic break-ins.

For more information or to report suspicious activity, residents can visit the Queensland Police website or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-333-000. By following these security tips, Ipswich residents can better protect their homes and vehicles from theft.
