Ipswich Central is set to become more pedestrian-friendly, thanks to a new grant aimed at improving the walking experience in the city. Division 3 Councillor Andrew Antoniolli announced that Ipswich City Council has been selected as one of two local governments in Queensland to receive a grant from the Department of Transport. This grant will fund a trial project designed to enhance walkability in the area, focusing on key locations like East Street, which serves as a critical link between the hospital and public transport.

The project will introduce increased shading, greenery, and resting points along East Street, creating a more comfortable and safer environment for pedestrians. “This is about making Ipswich not just a workable city but a walkable one,” said Councillor Antoniolli. The trial will feature a shaded arbor with lighting to improve security and reduce the heat island effect in the area. Council will seek feedback from residents to assess the project’s impact and determine whether it should be expanded.

In addition to the walkability initiative, Ipswich is preparing for the annual Galvanized Festival, which celebrates the city’s rich heritage. The 11-day festival, starting this Thursday, will feature a range of activities, including blacksmithing demonstrations, haunted ghost tours, historical dances, and the highly anticipated First Nations experiences. Councillor Antoniolli expressed particular excitement about the Indigenous Wild Food and Cultural Festival, set to take place at the Ipswich Turf Club on August 31st. The event will showcase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, food, and cultural demonstrations.

On the infrastructure front, Councillor Antoniolli, who chairs the Infrastructure and Assets Committee, provided an update on the ongoing upgrade of Redbank Plains Road. The project, which is expanding the road from two lanes to a four-lane divided carriageway, is on track for completion later this year. This upgrade is crucial as Ipswich continues to grow rapidly, with Councillor Antoniolli emphasizing the need for additional state and federal support to meet the city’s expanding infrastructure demands.
