The Ipswich arts scene is starting 2025 with an exciting collaborative exhibition, “Paper and Clay,” featuring local artists Andrea Baumert Howard and Donalee Moriarty. The exhibition will run from January 9 to 19 at the Ipswich Community Art Gallery, with an official opening on January 11 at 5 p.m.

Bringing together the ephemeral qualities of paper and the durability of clay, the artists explore shared themes of architecture and geometry in their work. Baumert Howard, known for her intricate paper creations, and Moriarty, a ceramicist specialising in slab-built clay forms, were connected through Ipswich City Council’s Articulate workshops.

“Council suggested we collaborate due to shared ideas about architecture in our responses,” Baumert Howard explained. The partnership has resulted in over 20 pieces each, showcasing the harmony between two vastly different mediums.

The exhibition highlights the journey of each artist. Baumert Howard started as a drawer before transitioning into paper art as a sustainable way to recycle discarded materials. Moriarty began her creative path with cement pots, evolving into clay artistry after experimenting with various materials.

“We love the juxtaposition of materials,” said Moriarty. “The impermanence of paper versus the lasting quality of clay creates an exciting dialogue.”

The opening night on January 11 is free to attend and promises wine, cheese, and an engaging opportunity to meet the artists and learn about their processes. Visitors can view the exhibition daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Come celebrate local art,” said Baumert Howard. “The best way to support artists is to turn up, engage, and perhaps buy a piece.”
