Ipswich author and illustrator Lawrey Goodrick is sparking imaginations with his latest creation, Half Life — a unique eco-fiction tale exploring environmental awareness, emotional resilience, and the hidden life of everyday objects.

Speaking on Get Your Arts Into Gear at the Arts Connect Community Gallery in Booval Fair, Goodrick shared how his books weave science, sustainability, and storytelling into powerful messages for readers of all ages. His debut title, Cans for Change, was published in 2021, and his upcoming release is due in January 2026 through Hawkeye Publishing.

“It’s about two AA batteries who go on an emotional adventure,” Goodrick said. “They’re sick of being thrown away by humans and just want freedom and choice in their battery life.”

The author, who lives with ADHD and high-functioning autism, said writing helps him channel creativity and raise awareness about mental health.

“I struggled in school, but as an adult, I’ve learned so much. I write stories to help people understand themselves earlier in life,” he explained.

Goodrick not only writes but also illustrates his own work, creating whimsical scientific characters such as “Schrödinger’s Cat” and battery versions of famous figures like Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking.

“When I draw, it adds another level of meaning,” he said. “You can’t help but connect with a character when it’s a battery with a soul.”

Pre-orders for The AA Battery Adventure are now available through Hawkeye Books at hawkeyebooks.com.au.
