Ipswich theatre fans are in for a treat as community theatre group Crossfyre Players brings the acclaimed Australian play The Female of the Species to the Ipswich Civic Centre this August.
Directed by Suzanne Matulich, the farcical comedy by Joanna Murray-Smith—loosely inspired by a real-life incident involving feminist icon Germaine Greer—follows famous author Margot Mason, held at gunpoint in her home by an uninvited guest.
“It’s outrageous, funny, and full of sharp commentary on feminism, family, and ego,” Suzanne said. “It’s a farce, but one that keeps the audience thinking—and laughing—right to the end.”
The cast features Linda Shapcott in the lead role, supported by local talent including Glen Smith, who joked about “camping up the drama” in his role.
This production is part of Ipswich Civic Centre’s Hatchery program, which supports new and locally produced arts.
Performances run 21–24 August, with three evening shows (21–23 August, 7:30pm) and a Sunday matinee (24 August, 2:00pm). Tickets are available through the Ipswich Civic Centre website or box office, with group discounts for four or more.
“It’s a fantastic night out—affordable, clever, and truly entertaining,” Suzanne said.
