The holiday season has officially kicked off in Ipswich with the launch of the city’s Christmas in Ipswich program and the grand opening of new entertainment venues at the Nicholas Street precinct. Mayor Teresa Harding, who led the festivities, shared excitement over the new additions to Ipswich’s vibrant city centre and the city’s festive plans for residents.

The Christmas in Ipswich program, which includes light installations, festive markets, and caroling events, will transform the Nicholas Street precinct starting December 13. Residents will be able to visit various festive sites across the city, including the iconic St Nicholas precinct lighting and the City Christmas Tree in d’Arcy Doyle Place, which will be illuminated on November 28 with Santa making a special appearance. “Our goal is to create joyful events across the city, from Goodna to Brassall,” Mayor Harding said. “We want every resident to experience the Christmas spirit close to home.”

Ipswich’s revitalized Nicholas Street precinct also had its grand opening last week, introducing key tenants that will bring new energy to the city’s heart. The new venues include Hoyts Cinemas, General Public — an “eatertainery” complete with bowling lanes and arcade games — and the upscale Hotel Commonwealth. Mayor Harding, who participated in the ribbon-cutting event, described the opening as a “once-in-a-generation transformation.”

In addition to holiday events, the city is already planning next year’s Spark Ipswich Festival. Expressions of interest for artists to contribute to the festival’s branding and visual identity are open until November 25. “Having local artists involved is essential to keeping the festival authentically Ipswich,” said Harding.

With these new venues and holiday events, Mayor Harding emphasized that after years of planning, the community finally has the space to enjoy these amenities. “Ipswich has waited 15 years for the Nicholas Street precinct to come to life,” Harding said.
