Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding is in Canberra this week, advocating for infrastructure funding and meeting with key ministers while attending the official opening of Parliament at the invitation of Speaker of the House Milton Dick.
“It’s a great opportunity to see democracy in action and push for what Ipswich needs,” Mayor Harding said during her weekly update on West Bremer Radio.
Back home, the city is buzzing with updates—from tasty new tenants in the city centre to historic commemorations.
🍔 Hello Harry Burgers Joins a Growing Precinct
Burger fans can rejoice as Hello Harry, the popular gourmet burger chain, will open later this year in the Nicholas Street Precinct, adding to the fast-growing foodie hub that already includes Sushi Hyo, Zamberos, and Nordic Bowls.
“It’s wonderful to see the precinct attracting more business and foot traffic—especially at night and on weekends,” said Mayor Harding.
🎨 Ipswich Art Awards Celebrate 25 Years
The Ipswich Art Awards return for their 25th anniversary this year, with over $18,000 in cash prizes up for grabs. Entries open August 1 and run until August 31, open to all Queensland artists. In 2023, over 300 artists submitted 400+ works, with half coming from outside the region.
“It’s a milestone year for the awards and a great opportunity to showcase our creative side,” Mayor Harding said.
🚧 Footpath Safety Gets High-Tech Attention
A fleet of quad-bike-style vehicles is currently inspecting over 300km of Ipswich’s footpaths to assess surface safety and accessibility for pedestrians, prams, and mobility devices. The project will run through mid-August and help identify problem areas for future maintenance.
“This is your rates in action,” the Mayor said. “It’s about making our city more walkable and safer.”
🎖 Community Marks 109 Years Since Battle of Fromelles
A solemn ceremony was held over the weekend to mark the 109th anniversary of the Battle of Fromelles, one of WWI’s bloodiest battles. The event was hosted by the 31st Battalion Association and supported by the Ipswich RSL sub-branch, with participation from students of local schools and descendants of fallen soldiers.
“It was moving to see younger generations paying tribute to our history,” said Mayor Harding.
🌟 From Parliament to Pop Culture
The Mayor also recently met actor Shane Jacobson, in town as a brand ambassador for IGA stores—several of which operate in Ipswich.
“He’s exactly as you’d imagine—genuine and passionate about Australians,” she said.
Mayor Harding will return to Ipswich after her Canberra visit and continue her advocacy work on local infrastructure priorities.
