Ipswich MP Jennifer Howard has returned to Parliament House for a sitting week she described as “turbulent and interesting.” Ms Howard spoke on the “Keeping Queensland Safe” bill, part of the government’s continued legislative agenda. Shining a Light on Domestic and Family Violence
May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, and Ms Howard highlighted the annual DVAC candlelight vigil supported by Ipswich City Council. “We must keep the pressure on this insidious issue,” she said, urging the community and governments to remain vocal and committed to change.
Celebrating Community Volunteers
Coinciding with National Volunteer Week, Ms Howard praised the many volunteers across Ipswich, especially those who powered the Ipswich Show. “Their hands are on everything,” she said, recognising the critical behind-the-scenes work of hundreds of residents.
25 Years of Ipswich Historical Society
The Ipswich Historical Society marked its 25th anniversary with the unveiling of a handcrafted steel horse sculpture by retired blacksmith and life member Ned Kelly. “It’s absolutely stunning,” said Ms Howard, encouraging residents to visit the Cooniana grounds.
Labour Day Without a March—but Plenty of Pride
With Labour Day coinciding with the federal election, Ipswich missed its traditional march, but Ms Howard joined celebrations in Brisbane. “It was 140 years of celebrating Queensland unions and their ongoing fight for workers’ rights.”
Planes, Trains and Autos: An Ipswich Hit
The popular Planes, Trains and Autos event drew large crowds and praise from Ms Howard. “There’s nothing else like it,” she said, commending Ipswich City Council and the Workshops Rail Museum for delivering a memorable, affordable day out.
St Andrew’s Opens New Cancer Centre
St Andrew’s Ipswich Private Hospital officially opened its Cancer Centre, allowing residents to receive radiation treatment locally. Ms Howard called it a “huge step forward” for healthcare in the region, thanking Ramsey Health for their investment.
Silkstone State School Inspires Young Minds
Ms Howard supported the school’s Under-8s Day, helping run the fruit stand. “It’s a wonderful event with educational and physical activities that truly inspire young minds,” she said.
Ipswich Show Attracts 33,000 Visitors
The Ipswich Show returned with strong attendance despite early rain. Ms Howard praised the mix of fine arts, livestock, and rural exhibits, saying it “embodied Ipswich’s city-country identity.”
Federal Election Brings Historic Result
Ms Howard celebrated Labor’s national victory and the diversity of the newly elected female MPs from Queensland. “It’s inspiring to see so many women from different backgrounds stepping into leadership,” she said.
