U3A Ipswich & West Moreton is now accepting new membership applications from seniors and retirees who are invited to attend the annual popular Open Day on Tuesday, January 17.

The Open Day showcases the wide range of interesting classes, physical activities and stimulating social meetings offered free of charge to members. New members get to meet, and chat with, tutors at Open Day.

The U3A Ipswich & West Moreton Open Day on January 17 will run from 9am till 11 noon at the Glebe Road Uniting Church on the corner of Glebe Road and Eileen Street in Booval.

U3A Ipswich & West Moreton, a not-for-profit incorporated body and registered charity, is a part of the world-wide University of the Third Age movement designed to give people an opportunity to remain mentally and physically active after retirement and into the ‘third age’ of life.

Membership, which costs $80 a year, entitles members to attend, at no extra cost, as many courses or subjects as they wish, with courses offered on every day of the week, bar Sunday, throughout the school terms. Some classes, however, continue throughtout the school holidays.

Courses on offer, all tutored by knowledgeable, experienced and often qualified volunteer tutors, include art, card games, computers, current affairs, exercise, many languages, guitar basics, history, line dancing, philosophy, photography, science, writing, yoga – and more.

President Ian Muil said U3A Ipswich & West Moreton now has over 40 volunteer teachers and tutors with many holding professional or accredited qualifications. For a complete list of 2023 courses offered visit www.u3aipswich.org.au.

U3A Ipswich & West Moreton classes are conducted at two ‘campuses’ across Ipswich – the Woodend Nature Centre in Coalfalls and the main campus in Glebe Road, Booval. Most classes resume in the first week of February.

U3A Ipswich is run entirely by volunteers and has a membership of over 400 people.

President Ian Muil encourages those interested to attend Open Day as the more popular classes may develop waiting lists as class sizes can be limited by space and subject.

The University of the Third Age organisation began in France in 1968 and quickly spread throughout Europe into Canada and the USA. The first U3A in Australia was established in Melbourne in 1984 and there are now over 300 U3As with over 100,000 members across Australia.

…..ends….
