Ipswich is gearing up for the first-ever Trashion Parade Ipswich, set to take place on November 2nd at the Masonic Lodge on Nicholas Street. The event, organised by the Ipswich Climate Action Group as part of the Ipswich Sustainable Living Festival, will highlight sustainability in fashion through fun, creative ways, promoting the recycling and upcycling of clothing.

The “Trashion Parade” aims to educate the public about the importance of reducing waste and consuming less, especially when it comes to fast fashion. Glen Smith, the event’s MC, expressed his excitement on West Bremer Radio: “This is such an important event, showcasing how we can recycle and rethink fashion in a way that’s fun and creative without being preachy.”

Rose and Vel from the Ipswich Climate Action Group joined the conversation to emphasize the staggering statistics around fashion waste. “Globally, about 80 billion pieces of clothing are purchased each year, and in Australia, 85% of textiles end up in landfills,” Rose shared. She added that Australia is the largest consumer of fast fashion in the world, highlighting the need for events like the Trashion Parade to raise awareness.

The parade will feature categories such as upcycled outfits, wearable art, and an “Op Shop Challenge,” where participants buy an outfit for under $20 from a thrift store. “The event isn’t just for designers or fashionistas; it’s for anyone who cares about the environment and wants to have fun,” Vel explained.

Participants of all ages are encouraged to join, and the event will include entertainment, prizes, and a light supper. A gold coin donation grants entry, with all proceeds supporting local environmental initiatives. The Ipswich community is invited to witness creative recycled fashion and learn more about sustainable living.
