This Thursday morning on West Bremer Radio, Ipswich MP Jennifer Howard joined the State of Play segment to discuss several key topics impacting the community. Despite recovering from a recent cold, Howard highlighted important local and state initiatives.
Kicking off the conversation, Howard emphasised the importance of Queensland Road Safety Week. This year’s theme, “We’re One Team, Let’s Drive Like It,” aims to encourage drivers to practice patience and respect on the road. “We’re seeing far too many road fatalities,” Howard lamented, pointing out that 185 Queenslanders have already lost their lives in road accidents this year—12 more than the same period last year. She urged everyone to observe the “Fatal Five” rules to ensure safety for all road users.
Howard also highlighted SES Week and the recent awards ceremony recognizing the selfless efforts of State Emergency Service volunteers. She expressed pride in these dedicated individuals who consistently step up during natural disasters, pandemics, and other emergencies. “The very best of Queensland do wear orange,” she said, acknowledging the invaluable contribution of SES volunteers across multiple councils, including Ipswich.

In addition, Howard shared exciting news about the expansion of the Tools for Trade scheme, which provides financial assistance to first-year apprentices. Announcing this initiative at the new Bundamba TAFE alongside the Minister for Small Business, Lance McCallum, Howard explained that the program would now offer a $1,000 reimbursement for 10,000 more apprentices across Queensland, alleviating some cost-of-living pressures.
The segment also touched on a community victory regarding the proposed school site on Scots Farm. After thorough review and advocacy, the government decided the land was unsuitable for a school, allowing the family to maintain its historical connection to the area.
Finally, Howard paid tribute to Colleen Freeman, wife of former Ipswich Mayor Des Freeman, who recently passed away. Colleen was a pioneer for women in politics, becoming the first woman elected to the ALP Admin Committee in Queensland and leaving a lasting legacy in the community.
