As part of Queensland Road Safety Week, Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy joined West Bremer Radio‘s Crime Watch segment to emphasise the importance of road safety. Queensland Road Safety Week runs from August 26th to 30th, marking its 10th year as a critical initiative to promote safer driving habits across the state.

Under the theme “We Are One Team,” the Queensland Police Service (QPS) urges all motorists to work together to keep roads safe. This campaign comes in response to alarming statistics: as of August 19, the southern region of Queensland accounts for 34 of the state’s road fatalities, with speeding and other dangerous driving behaviors being major contributors. Notably, motorcyclists are disproportionately affected, making up 50 of the total road fatalities despite representing only about 5% of registered vehicles.

To address these issues, the Street Smarts Initiative, in collaboration with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), has launched the “No Excuses for Speeding” campaign. This campaign targets young male drivers aged 17 to 39 in regional Queensland, highlighting the severe consequences of speeding and discouraging dangerous driving.

Throughout Queensland Road Safety Week, Ipswich Police will enforce a zero-tolerance policy towards unsafe driving and engage in educational efforts to promote safe driving. Various events across the Ipswich District are planned to raise awareness and provide resources on road safety. These events include locations like the Town Square Redbank Plains Shopping Centre, Rosewood Drakes, and Orion Springfield Shopping Center.

The QPS, in partnership with local councils and organizations, encourages community members to attend these events, ask questions, and learn more about road safety. By working together, everyone can contribute to making Queensland’s roads safer.
