State Member for Jordan, Charis Mullen, has announced the return of the Jordan Local Business Awards, a celebration of small business excellence in the region. Speaking on West Bremer Radio’s State of Play, Mullen said voting will open on May 1 and run until May 25, coinciding with Queensland Small Business Month.

“The awards are a fantastic opportunity to recognise local favourites—from cafés and tradies to newcomers and micro businesses,” Mullen said. With nine categories and a public vote to crown the overall Small Business of the Year, winners will be revealed at a gala awards night in June.

Voters also go into the draw to win a $100 voucher to spend at a nominated business. Mullen urged residents to keep an eye on her social media for updates.

Also in May, Mullen will host the annual Domestic and Family Violence Night of Remembrance on May 8, held near her Springfield office at 6 Yoga Way. “It’s a time to remember victims, reflect as a community, and say enough is enough,” she said. A new candlelight walk has been added to this year’s vigil as a quiet act of solidarity.

Mullen also celebrated federal funding secured by MPs Milton Dick and Shayne Neumann for the YMCA Springfield Lakes, which will finally complete its long-dormant mezzanine level into a vibrant youth hub. The space will support programs in music, digital arts, and potentially after-school care, meeting high community demand.

“The YMCA serves over 9,000 people each week. This investment will take the centre to the next level,” Mullen said, praising the collaboration between state and federal governments.

With Easter on the horizon, Mullen wrapped the interview with warm wishes—and a cheeky nod to Greek Easter tradition: “Less chocolate, more lamb!”
