As Ipswich gears up for the holiday season, Senior Constable Chantelle Dowell joined West Bremer Radio’s Crimewatch segment to remind residents of the importance of home security during the festive period. With opportunistic thieves ready to do their own “Christmas shopping,” it’s crucial to safeguard homes and gifts.
“Christmas is a time for family, friends, and goodwill, but what if your Christmas was stolen?” Constable Dowell asked. She emphasized the importance of proactive measures to deter thieves, especially as many households prepare for vacations or time away.
Tips to Protect Your Home This Christmas:
- Activate Security Systems: Visible measures like CCTV, alarms, and quality deadlocks act as strong deterrents. Ensure all devices are charged and active.
- Leave a Light On: Create the illusion of activity at home by leaving lights on or having a neighbor collect your mail while you’re away.
- Lock Doors and Windows: Always lock up, even when at home. An unlocked door can invite unwelcome guests.
- Hide Valuables: Keep gifts, electronics, and other valuables out of sight to reduce temptation for opportunistic thieves.
- Create a Safety Plan: Discuss safety measures and exit routes with your household, similar to a fire safety plan.
