It is a Tuesday morning here on the Breckie show. And of course, you are listening to us on West streaming live on the app and also on Amazon Alexa and Google smart speakers. Time to have a little look and see what’s been happening in council. And we do that each and every Tuesday morning with Mayor Theresa Harding. Good morning. Good morning, Daman. Good morning to all the listeners. First of all, I’ve got to say, how was the burger that you had with Councillor Dave Cullen at the Marburg show?
00:29
When you go to the Marburg show or any of the lot of events in Marburg, you have to have a Marburger from the Marburg School PNC. It is a burger with the work. And so I think it’s about 2.30 in the afternoon, which is quite good because I think it has to be a late lunch if you’re having it. It’s a huge meal. It certainly is, but you both look like you were very happy consuming it. Yes. Yes, definitely. I had tomato sauce on mine.
00:58
salad, it was lovely. Sounds very nice, well of course you’re gonna have to back it up now and show just how good you can be at the 151st Ipi show which is on this weekend. Yeah we’re very lucky this 151st Ipswich show is on this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Council’s really proud to sponsor the Ipswich show and I was just then at recently too that I’m opening the show so it’s a real pleasure. It’s a fantastic show, it’s just getting bigger and bigger. I’ve had a sneak peek at
01:28
Bluey is going to be there but the pavilions and the exhibitions all around the circuit there is just huge, it’s going to be absolutely fantastic. And of course more than 36,000 people are expected to attend so once again bumper crowds. Huge crowds, look the Friday Night Road Day is really really popular so that’s always big and then Bluey will be there as well as the sideshow alley and it’s just really fantastic as well as
01:57
there’ll be a dedicated animal precinct and a heritage precinct will return as well which first came along last year at the 150th celebration. Yeah and what’s your favourite ride in Sideshow Alley? Oh. Now there was a probing question you weren’t expecting. No I didn’t go, Steve went on the beast last time and I didn’t, I was meant to go on it and I didn’t go on it so this time I’ll say the beast. I’m going to go on the beast.
02:23
there this time. Okay we’re gonna come and document it for the people of Ipswich don’t you worry. Now also after the Ippy show of course we’ve got the last of the show cycle but definitely not the least and that is of course the Rosewood show. Yeah we have three shows in Ipswich so Marbleg was last weekend and Ipswich this weekend and that last weekend of June is the Rosewood show they have a fantastic bull riding night on the Friday night and the show
02:49
you know on the Friday and Saturday, it’s a fantastic country show and I encourage people to attend them, they’re really great fun. Yeah they certainly are and of course look out for West Burma Radio, we’ll be broadcasting all three days of the Ipi show and we’ll be in the, which pavilion is it? The Grandstand pavilion, thank you, I was getting a prompt call. You’ve got the best posi. I know.
03:18
just near where the best chips are. I’ve got it all sussed out don’t you worry about that. Right. Alrighty now something a little bit different in the Ipswich libraries are of course certainly proving their popularity with the people aren’t they? Yeah we’ve put a lot of work into the library so we’re quite fortunate to get state government funding as well so we’ll be watching our annual survey as well just yesterday.
03:46
Our libraries include the Eastwood Central Library, the Children’s Library in Tumul Place, the Springfield Central Library, the Redbeck Plaza Library, the Redbeck Plains Library, the Rosewood Library, the Carolee Library Pod as well as our virtual branch. So if people let us know how they’re using the libraries, what they like, what they don’t like, the programming, it allows us to shape our future services and programs. Yeah and of course it’s not just like I guess the libraries that you and I grew up with. I mean these have…
04:13
pretty much everything, you know, not just the books but also DVDs and magazines and all that sort of thing as well. Yeah, and the way the books are displayed, you’ve got a great marketplace there, as well as the maker spaces which are really great for 3D stuff as well and I think we see them being really popular during school holidays. We know we get hundreds of thousands of families right across the grid that come to our libraries then as well.
04:38
Yeah and quite a lot of people actually took part in the last annual survey didn’t they? Yeah we had the 2000 people respond last time and the most common suggestion actually from 60% of the respondents was better access to library services outside standard hours so we’ve now have smart lockers that could be accessed 24-7 outside our district city libraries as well so you know we will change our programs and what we do based on the needs from the residents.
05:07
That is great. Well the course current survey runs from the well until the 17th of June. So it takes about 10 minutes to complete and I can I guess they find that online do they? Yes they do. It’s got Ipswich libraries you’ll find them. Alright fantastic. Now I know last week you got a chance to meet up with the new cohort of 37 members of the Ipswich Youth Advisory Council. Yeah it was great and it’s great for our
05:34
I guess all the councils get to meet them for the first time as well. It was great for them to engage with the elected representative. There’s 37 new members. It’s the 17th term of the East West Youth Advisory Council and it’s open to everyone aged between 13 to 18. So we took them around the chambers. We had a good discussion, a meet and greet. We have a really young population at Switch, so it’s really important that we make sure that we engage our youth to make sure that we have the services and the programs that they need. Yep.
06:02
And of course last year I believe they collaborated with council on several significant topics including the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Yeah so we did a fair bit of work on our roadmap on how we’ll plan for that. One of the members actually came into Brisbane with me when we had a big seminar with the Premier of Queensland. They also worked with us on our inclusion and connectedness plan as well as our draft if switch plan. Now you might think
06:32
a planning scheme, why would you do that? But it was really great to work out that how we plan where we are going to put future sporting fields or shopping centres and things like that, that happens under our planning scheme. So it was really great to get feedback from IAC on our planning scheme. Yeah and speaking of the Games, congratulations to you, it’s the first time we’ve spoken since the big announcement that you’re on the Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee. Thank you, it’s a real honour, it happened on Friday and there are…
07:02
two mayors on the Bocog, on that Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee, myself and the Lord Mayor of Brisbane. So it’s an honour to represent our region and making sure that we all get the benefits of a great game in the future. And way back in 2000 when you were just a mere spectator, did you ever think you’d actually be on the Games Organising Committee? No, no. I lived in Sydney for 14 years and I can remember
07:31
my youngest one, Ryan, was a little baby going to the Sydney Olympics and it was huge. You get such a amount of civic pride. I mean, we have years and years of construction and infrastructure upgrades and road upgrades and train lines being built, but there’s a great amount of pride when you get the games here and there are tons of economic and social opportunities as well. So, yeah, it’s really great to be able to be part of that.
07:58
Oh well we just have to put in the bid now for North Ipswich Reserve and Brighton Homes Arena. Yeah well the Brighton Homes Arena is already concerned in the host documents that’s been signed off by the International Olympic Committee, it’s been signed off by the Prime Minister, the Premier and the Lord Mayor. So in the documents there it’s actually called the Ipswich Stadium and they’ll have the modern pentathlon. And look over the coming years we’ll be looking at where other training venues and so on will be on for the athletes and competitors.
08:28
It’s going to be exciting times and good luck with all of that. I know it’s probably increased your workload tenfold but you’ll be enjoying every moment of it. It’s a great opportunity. It’s a way of getting city pride as well. It’s a rule on it that Ipswich should be a player in this as well. Alright, well we wish you all the best for that and we look forward to seeing you on the Beast at the Ipswich show this weekend.
08:55
and look out for the uh… you know whisper in my facebook page because we’re gonna video it. Oh and I’ve been told you shouldn’t eat something beforehand so I better be very careful. Yeah yeah just. It’s quite a full on ride. Take that advice very carefully alright. That’s right and I’ve also submitted one of my um crocheted blankets into the show as well so fingers crossed. Oh okay could be a big winner for you.
09:20
Oh, I don’t know, there’s a lot of good crochet in Ipswich, so I’ll see how I go. Alright, well all the best for it and thank you once again for catching up with us again this week. We’ll look forward to doing it again next week. Thanks, and I’ll see you on the weekend. There we go, Ipswich Mayor Theresa Harding joining us to take a little look at what’s been happening in Council. We’ll take a break, come back with more in a moment.
