Division 4 Councillor Jim Madden provided an update on the latest developments in Ipswich City Council, covering significant local projects and upcoming events.

Firstly, Councillor Madden announced that the Mount Marrow site has been removed from consideration for the new Western Resource Recovery Centre. After extensive community consultation and a thorough review by the council, it was determined that the Mount Marrow site posed several challenges. These included difficulties with utility installation, proximity to a nearby school, high costs for site access upgrades, and state environmental and cultural concerns. “Even though council already owned the land, the obstacles were too significant,” said Cr Madden. The focus now shifts to the two remaining options: Rosewood and Jurapilli. A decision on the preferred site will follow a review of community feedback and a report from council officers.
In other news, the much-anticipated reopening of Colleges Crossing Recreation Reserve is on track for later this year. The beloved Division 4 attraction has been undergoing rehabilitation following flood damage, with the support of the Queensland Reconstruction Authority. Despite some delays due to wet weather, Cr Madden confirmed that the project is progressing well. “Bulk earthworks are now complete, and work on new amenities, including shelters, shade sails, playgrounds, and landscaping, is well underway,” he noted. The revamped facility will also feature cultural elements acknowledging the area’s historical significance.
Excitement is also building for the start of the Galvanised Festival 2024, which officially kicks off tonight. This year’s festival, celebrating Ipswich’s rich heritage, promises a range of events, including a World War II-themed swing dance and dinner, as well as an Indigenous Wild Food and Cultural Festival at the Ipswich Turf Club. Cr Madden encouraged residents to participate in the festival activities and enjoy the vibrant celebrations across the city.
“Get out there and enjoy the Galvanize Festival,” urged Cr Madden, highlighting the variety of events available. The full program can be found on the Ipswich City Council’s website.
