The Ipswich arts community has celebrated a huge weekend of creativity, with the Connected Mural Art Awards drawing artists, community members and local leaders to Booval Fair.
Speaking on West Bremer Radio’s Get Your Arts Into Gear, Booval Fair representatives Rachel and Carissa described Saturday’s event as a major success, praising the strong community atmosphere and support between participating artists.
Six artists created works based around the competition’s theme of connection, with each producing a distinctly different interpretation.
Local artist Alex Jones was named the winner, with Kirsty O’Brien taking second place.
Arts Connect Ipswich’s Glen Smith revealed Alex’s victory was particularly significant, as she has been rebuilding her confidence and returning to art following a stroke.
“For her to now be winning awards is incredible,” Smith said.
Organisers said the event also attracted strong community support, with Mayor Teresa Harding, local councillors and state MPs among those attending.
Following the success of the inaugural competition, discussions are already underway about bringing the Connected Mural Art Awards back in 2027, with organisers also teasing the possibility of a photography competition.
More events coming to Booval Fair
The shopping centre is also preparing to partner with the YMCA to deliver an Ipswich Thriving Seniors program, while September’s Galvanized festival will feature Memories of Booval Fair.
Residents are being encouraged to contribute their memories and stories of the centre, which first opened in 1969.
School holiday art activities are also set to return in a revamped format.
The busy weekend extended well beyond Booval Fair, with the Get Your Arts Into Gear team also highlighting exhibitions and performances across Ipswich, including works by artists with special needs at Bingley Dell, an exhibition at the Arts Connect Community Gallery and the Ipswich One-Act Play Festival.
The team also reminded locals that nominations remain open for the 2026 Prism Awards, recognising outstanding artists, creatives, organisations and contributors to Ipswich’s arts community.
