A new independent art space is opening in Kalbar, with local creatives hoping it will provide much-needed opportunities for emerging and established artists to showcase their work outside the city.

The new venue, known as Kalbar Gallery, is located in the old Cow Bar building on Edward Street, a rustic former industrial site that has been transformed into an exhibition space filled with exposed timber and weathered iron.

Gallery owner Alicia said the idea had been building for some time, driven by ongoing frustration at the lack of accessible places for artists to exhibit their work, particularly in the Scenic Rim and Ipswich region. She said too few spaces were available, and those that did exist were often difficult for newer artists to access.

Alicia, who describes herself as an eco-artist, works with natural materials such as clay, stone, ash and charcoal after moving away from acrylics. She said the gallery would reflect that same handmade, sustainable spirit, with its opening exhibition featuring a diverse group of artists working across painting, ceramics, textiles and natural dyeing.

Among the exhibitors are artists using recycled and repurposed materials, hand-spun wool, eco-dyeing techniques and locally inspired subject matter, creating a show with a strong environmental and community focus.

Supporters of the project say spaces like Kalbar Gallery are vital for the local arts scene, not only to give artists somewhere to show their work, but also because creative practice plays an important role in wellbeing and community connection. They argue that independent venues are increasingly stepping in where larger institutions and public bodies cannot always respond quickly enough.

The gallery’s opening event will be held this Saturday from 2pm to 4pm at 56 Edward Street, Kalbar. After opening, the gallery plans to operate Wednesday to Sunday, closing only on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Organisers say they hope the launch is just the start, with future exhibitions expected once the gallery is fully established.
