The Ipswich City Council has commenced significant sediment removal works at Robelle Domain in Springfield Central following severe flooding eight months ago. The flooding deposited around 5,000 cubic meters of sediment along Mountain Creek, an area behind the popular Orion Lagoon. These “Robelle Domain sediment works” are expected to last approximately two months, with contractors removing the equivalent of 500 truckloads of sediment.

Councillor Paul Tully noted that while the work is necessary to restore the park to its former state, residents should anticipate some disruptions, including increased noise and temporary changes to park access. Once completed, the area will be reopened, allowing families to once again enjoy picnics and outdoor activities in this well-loved section of Springfield Central.
In other local news, preparations are underway for the Vietnam Veterans Day ceremony at Goodna RSL, marking the 58th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. The event, scheduled for 4:30 PM this Sunday at Club Park View, will honor the service and sacrifice of Vietnam veterans. Councillor Tully emphasized the importance of remembering the veterans’ contributions, especially as many were not properly recognized upon their return home.
Additionally, Ipswich City Council is actively preparing for the upcoming Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) conference in October. Among the motions Ipswich will propose are extending the voluntary home buyback program for flood-affected properties and addressing cost-shifting in fire ant control. The council is advocating for continued state and federal funding for these initiatives to alleviate the financial burden on local ratepayers.
These issues, from environmental restoration at Robelle Domain to supporting Vietnam veterans and managing local government responsibilities, highlight the diverse challenges and opportunities facing Ipswich’s Division 2.
