Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding Recognises Local Sports Stars, Champions Sustainability Efforts, and Turns Sod for Ripley Valley Development

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding is set to honour Ipswich’s sporting stars and promote key city initiatives this week. In a packed schedule, the mayor will present the prestigious “keys to the city” to Ipswich State High School’s girls’ rugby league team, who achieved the remarkable feat of winning three titles: the National Schoolgirls Cup, the NRL Queensland Schoolgirls Trophy, and their regional competition. This recognition follows a previous award for the school’s boys’ rugby league team, who won the schoolboys’ championship in 2022.

Additionally, a public ceremony will be held on Friday to celebrate Ipswich’s Olympians and Paralympians. The event, taking place at Tulmur Place in the Nicholas Street precinct, will allow residents to meet local sports heroes such as Mollie O’Callaghan and Ella Ramsey, who have excelled on the world stage. “We’re inviting the community to come in their green and gold and give them a great welcome,” said Harding.

October also marks Ipswich’s “Sustainability Month,” with events designed to encourage a greener lifestyle. The Ipswich Sustainable Living Festival on October 19 will be a highlight, featuring ABC Gardening Australia’s Hannah Maloney. Mayor Harding emphasized the importance of the event, noting, “It was a huge success last year, and this year, we’re bringing even more workshops and entertainment.”

Meanwhile, addressing the region’s growing housing needs, Mayor Harding participated in a sod-turning event for a new development in Ripley Valley, where affordable housing is a priority. The project aims to provide more options, including single and one- to two-bedroom dwellings, to meet rising demand.
