State MP for Ipswich West, Wendy Bourne, joined the Brekkie Club on West Bremer Radio to discuss key community issues and updates.

Tragic Incident at Yamanto Central

Bourne expressed deep sympathy for the victim of Monday’s horrific incident at Yamanto Central Shopping Centre. She praised the swift actions of responders and acknowledged the trauma faced by witnesses.

Elder Abuse Inquiry

Bourne highlighted the pressing issue of elder abuse, revealing that one in six older Australians are affected. In Ipswich alone, there are 130 reported cases. The inquiry aims to examine the extent of elder abuse, evaluate existing policies, and recommend stronger measures to protect vulnerable seniors. Bourne emphasized the importance of financial abuse prevention, which remains the most prevalent form.

The inquiry is open for public submissions until April 10, with plans to visit Indigenous communities for on-the-ground insights.

Volunteering Inquiry

Bourne also addressed the critical role of volunteers in keeping Ipswich running, from RSL sub-branches to community organizations like Legacy. She encouraged residents to share their experiences and suggestions, with the inquiry’s submission deadline set for February 28.

Community Engagement

Reflecting on a busy festive season, Bourne attended numerous community events, including Christmas carols in Marburg and Brassall, and RSL Christmas functions.

Ipswich Hospital Expansion

Bourne shared excitement about the progress of the Ipswich Hospital expansion, including a new 200-bed wing, upgraded emergency department, and improved parking facilities.
