This week’s “All Ability Hour” on West Bremer Radio featured a truly inspiring guest, Don Mortis, who shared his remarkable journey of overcoming challenges and embracing life with passion and purpose.

Don has spina bifida hydrocephalus, a condition he was born with that has resulted in paralysis from the waist down. Despite these physical limitations, Don has never let his disability define him. Instead, he has channeled his energy into his love for music, becoming a skilled French horn player. He has been playing the French horn since he was 11 years old and describes its sound as “exquisitely beautiful, mellow, and rich,” calling it the “heart and soul of the orchestra.”

During the interview, Don spoke about how music has been a constant source of joy and resilience in his life. He shared that playing music lifts him emotionally and psychologically, helping him to navigate the daily challenges he faces. His passion extends beyond music; Don also enjoys songwriting and poetry, and he is an avid collector of gems, turning them into gentleman’s dress rings when he has the opportunity.

Don’s message to listeners was clear: don’t let challenges hold you back. He encouraged people with disabilities to pursue their interests and passions, saying, “Get out there and do it. Live your dreams to the best of your abilities within the bounds of your disability.” His story serves as a powerful reminder that life’s obstacles can be met with creativity and determination.

As the show wrapped up, the hosts expressed their hope to have Don back on the program in the future, eager to learn more about his life and the experiences that have shaped him. Don’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of following one’s passions, no matter the obstacles.
